What is a cybersecurity and infrastructure security agency? In this article, we will discuss more information in this title. Read this article so you can have knowledge of this study.

What is Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency?

The United States has the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA). CISA is charged with protecting the entire U.S. (public and private) sector. It includes the nation’s critical infrastructure, from cyber threats.

CISA is the new information security organization of the United States. The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has become the CISA.

DHS is the US federal department that protects the nation. It is from terrorism, cyber-attacks, and other national disasters. DHS has five primary divisions.

The following divisions are:

Office of the Secretary

The first division is the Office of the Secretary. Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen is the leader of DHS. The Office of the Secretary provides leadership and coordination to all DHS activities. It also handles DHS’ budget and departmental operations.

Management Directorate

The second division is the Management Directorate. The Management Directorate manages the budget, personnel, procurement, and IT management.

Operations Directorate

The third division is the Operations Directorate. The Operations Directorate protects the US borders from terrorism, cyber-attacks, and natural disasters. It also prepares for these threats before they happen.

Science and Technology

The fourth division is the Science and Technology Directorate (S&T). S&T develops new technologies to make America safe from terrorists and other threats.

It also protects government networks and critical infrastructure.

Office of Intelligence and Analysis

Lastly, the fifth division is the Office of Intelligence and Analysis (I&A).

I&A analyzes intelligence to keep America safe from terrorism and other threats. It also keeps an eye on cyber attacks.

Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency: Budget

How much does the US spend on cybersecurity? In 2017, the US spent $21 billion on cybersecurity for non-military agencies. This includes $4 billion in information technology (IT).

It spent another $3 billion on IT for the military. This brings the total for cybersecurity to $25 billion.

Timeline, Cyber Attacks, and Laws

The first version of CISA was called the Security and Prosperity Partnership of North America (SPP). It started in 2005. It was meant to make economic relationships stronger between Canada, Mexico, and the US.

The first cyberattack in the US happened on January 24, 2007. A Russian hacker broke into the website of the Department of Energy (DOE).

The hacker’s name was Vladimir Putin. Putin stole emails from government officials. He then published them on Russian websites.

Then, on June 8, 2009, President Barack Obama signed a law called the Cybersecurity Act of 2009.

The law had three main goals:

  • make sure the private sector has the resources to protect itself from cybercrime.
  • Share information on cyber threats between government agencies and private companies.
  • work with the private sector to develop “cybersecurity” tools that protect companies from cyber attacks.

Conclusion

The Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) is the new cyber defense agency of the United States. CISA protects the US against cyber attacks, terrorism, and natural disasters.
