What is Cybersecurity in the UK?

The UK has taken steps to improve the cyber security of the nation but is still facing many threats. Also, the UK government has established the National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC) with a mission to help individuals and organizations protect themselves from online attacks.

The ‘National Cyber Security Strategy’ from the UK Government was published in February 2016[1] The strategy outlines five strategic priorities:

  • Make the UK the safest place to live and do business online
  • Make the UK the most secure place in the world to do digital business
  • Build a skilled cybersecurity workforce for a digital age
  • Work with industry and academia to keep pace with fast-moving cyber security threats
  • Work with international partners to keep our citizens safe in a digital world.

It also includes a number of cross-cutting themes: resilience, leadership, innovation, partnerships, law and governance, and research and development.

The NCSC works with the public, private and third sectors to improve cyber security at home and abroad. The NCSC is part of the GCHQ (UK Government Communications Headquarters).

Cybercriminals are becoming more proficient and make use of sophisticated techniques to manipulate victims into providing their personal information. The nature of the threat has developed across all sectors, no matter how large or small.

It can affect both individuals and organizations alike. The UK government is therefore working with industry, academia, and international partners to ensure that the UK is safe from cyber threats.

Operations

In the UK, the NCSC works to protect the public from cyber threats in three main ways:

  • Reducing threats from outside the UK. This includes working in a global forum to improve understanding of cyber threats and increase resilience against cyberattacks in a variety of online environments.
  • Reducing threats from within the UK. The NCSC works with industry and government partners to develop a ‘whole-system approach to cyber security which empowers consumers and businesses with easy-to-use information, advice, and guidance about how to make their systems more secure.
  • Supporting the wider public sector to defend themselves from increasingly sophisticated cyber attacks. The NCSC operates a 24/7 incident response service for UK government departments and agencies. It also works to improve the general cyber security of the UK public sector by training staff, providing advice, and identifying vulnerabilities.

Benefits

The UK’s National Cyber Security Strategy is designed to help individuals and organizations better protect themselves from cyber-attacks. As part of this, the NCSC is working to make cyber security accessible to everyone.

The NCSC is making the UK one of the safest places to do digital business. This includes helping companies to understand the risks they face online and how to protect themselves from cyber-attacks.

This will also contribute to building a stronger economy, with more companies operating safely in the global digital economy. Moreover, it will help individuals to use technology safely and securely, enabling them to take advantage of online opportunities.

Conclusion

It is essential to raise cyber security awareness among individuals, organizations, and government agencies. The NCSC is working to achieve this by providing guidance and advice on how to stay safe online.
