1971 – Robert Morris released the worm, which spread through ARPANET. It into 6,000 computers that were connected to ARPANET. Thus, this was the first-ever hacking incident on ARPANET. 

1972 – Len Adleman developed the RSA encryption algorithm. This is one of the widest encryption algorithms today.

1977 – Robert Morris released a worm called Internet Worm which spread exponentially on ARPANET. It crashed 6,000 computers on ARPANET and caused $10 million in damages. Nonetheless, there was no hacking involved because Morris had permission to release the worm.

1980 – The United States Department of Defense (DoD) created the Trusted Computer System Evaluation Criteria (TCSEC). It defined security levels, which are still used today. 

Nevertheless, TCSEC didn’t define what security meant. Thus, this led to the development of the Orange Book. 

1982 – The National Bureau of Standards (NBS) released the Orange Book. The Orange Book defined security levels that were used to define what security means. 

The orange book defined security as “confidentiality, integrity, availability, accountability.”
