Objectives

Xiaomi officially entered the Indian market in July 2014 through its subsidiary Xiaomi India. In that same month, Xiaomi announced a new round of funding worth US$1 billion. So, the company sold its Redmi 2 smartphone for ₹6,999 (US$110), which was notably less than half of Samsung’s low-end offering at the time.

In July 2015, Xiaomi announced a new round of funding totaling US$1.1 billion led by Alibaba Group and Singapore’s sovereign wealth fund Temasek Holdings. Also in July 2015, Xiaomi unveiled a new version of the Mi Note, with a Snapdragon 810 processor and 3 GB of RAM.

Advantages

Xiaomi has gained traction in the smartphone market with its affordable, high-performance smartphones. Also, Xiaomi’s RedMi series of smartphones are popular for offering quality hardware at competitive prices. 

Xiaomi phones are particularly popular in markets like India, Indonesia, and Malaysia, where they outsell Samsung and other competitors. Also, Xiaomi has expanded to the wearable market with the launch of the Mi Band line of activity trackers in 2014. The company has also launched a VR headset called Mi VR Play.

Challenges

Xiaomi’s expansion outside China was initially blocked by concerns over its relationship with data-leaking services in China. Also, Indian officials arrested a vice president at Xiaomi on suspicion of fraud but later released him. In 2017, the company’s app store was to be collecting call logs and SMSes of users without their consent.

Solution

In 2015, Google announced a new range of Android One smartphones in partnership with Indian manufacturers Lava, Micromax, and Spice. The smartphones were in emerging markets such as India, Indonesia, and Myanmar. 

Also, a few of these manufacturers launched a new line of budget-friendly ‘Made in India’ smartphones under the Android One brand. Finally, Xiaomi saw this as an opportunity to enter the Indian market.
